Chapter 01
The pit or the fireplace decides the seating before anything else does
We start a fire feature project with one choice: a fire pit, open and central, or a built outdoor fireplace with a hearth and a fixed face. That choice sets the geometry of everything around it. A pit pulls seating into a ring; a fireplace pulls it into a half-circle facing one direction. We make that call before we talk about chairs, because the chairs are the last thing to arrive, not the first.

Masonry is the craft, not a veneer stuck to a frame
The fire feature itself is stone and brick masonry work, built up in courses rather than assembled from a kit. We build in Techo Bloc and Belgard, using their wall and paver lines to tie the fire feature into whatever patio or seating wall surrounds it, so it reads as part of the hardscape instead of a separate purchase dropped onto finished ground.
That matters most at the base, where nobody looks. A fire pit meant to hold heat and stand up to a Tennessee winter needs a real footing under the masonry, laid before the visible stonework goes up, the same discipline we bring to every patio we pour.
Chapter 03
Seating drawn around the heat, not pushed toward it afterward
Seating area design and integration happens at the same drawing stage as the fire feature, not after the mason leaves. We size the ring or the hearth apron to the number of people you actually entertain, and we set the paving pattern so chairs have a real surface instead of grass that turns to mud by the second winter.
"George and his crew built us a screened-in porch, an outdoor kitchen and a firepit area. Lighting and planting tied into the same plan
A fire feature that gets used after dark needs lighting designed alongside it, not clipped on afterward, and planting that frames the seating area instead of crowding it. We coordinate both at the same stage as the masonry, so the low light around a fire pit and the specimen planting behind a fireplace are part of the original design, not an afterthought once the stonework is finished.
That coordination is what keeps a fire feature from looking dropped onto finished ground. When the lighting, planting and masonry are drawn together, the fire pit or fireplace reads like it was always meant to sit exactly where it does.
